Trump says US agrees to resume Iran talks, declares ceasefire ‘over’
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Washington has agreed to continue negotiations with Iran, even as he declared that the ceasefire between the two countries had ended.
“Iran has asked us to continue ‘talks.’ We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
His remarks came as tensions remained high following a fresh round of US airstrikes on Iranian targets and retaliatory missile attacks by Tehran across the Middle East.
According to a report by the New York Post, Israel is prepared to take part in future US military operations against Iran if requested by Washington. An Israeli source told the newspaper that the country had demonstrated its support during the recent conflict and remained ready to assist if needed.
The latest escalation began early Thursday when the United States carried out new airstrikes on Iran. Tehran responded by launching missiles towards US-allied countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. Air raid sirens sounded multiple times in Bahrain, which hosts the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, while alerts were also reported in Jordan, where the US maintains military forces.
The renewed exchange followed similar attacks a day earlier, raising concerns that the already fragile ceasefire could collapse completely.
Despite the violence, technical-level negotiations between Washington and Tehran are continuing, according to a US official. The ongoing diplomatic engagement has eased fears of an immediate return to full-scale conflict, even as both sides continue military actions.
Trump had said on Wednesday that the ceasefire was “over” but indicated that he would not block further negotiations with Iran.
Formal talks between the two countries had been postponed earlier this week as Iran observed funeral ceremonies for former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an airstrike at the start of the recent US-Israeli military campaign.
