Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup ends in heartbreak as Portugal exit revives debate over his role

Cristiano Ronaldo bowed out of what is expected to be his final FIFA World Cup with a disappointing Round of 16 defeat to Spain, ending a campaign that once again reignited questions over whether the 41-year-old should have remained Portugal’s first-choice striker.

Portugal’s 1-0 loss in Texas capped a mixed tournament for Ronaldo. While he became the first men’s player to score in six different World Cups, his historic achievement was overshadowed by inconsistent performances and growing scrutiny over his place in the starting lineup.

After struggling in the opening match against DR Congo, Ronaldo responded with a brace against Uzbekistan, briefly silencing critics. However, his influence waned again against stronger opponents, including Colombia, Croatia and Spain, where he found it difficult to impose himself despite playing the full 90 minutes.

Critics argued that younger striker Gonçalo Ramos offered greater mobility and attacking threat, especially after scoring against Croatia. Yet coach Roberto Martínez restored Ronaldo to the starting XI for the clash with Spain.

Against the eventual winners, Ronaldo managed just two shots on target and had limited involvement as Spain controlled the contest. Moments of visible frustration reflected his difficult evening, with missed passing opportunities and a lack of service from teammates compounding Portugal’s struggles.

Despite the emotional exit, Ronaldo struck a philosophical tone after the match.

“I’m leaving with a clear conscience. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I gave it my very best,” he said.

Although Ronaldo’s glittering career will end without a World Cup title, his legacy remains unmatched in Portuguese football. He pointed to his role in helping Portugal win three major international trophies, including UEFA Euro 2016, saying those achievements leave him with “only happiness” despite the World Cup disappointment.

His final World Cup may have ended in heartbreak, but it did little to diminish one of football’s greatest careers.
