Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claim strikes on US positions in Kuwait and Bahrain, warn of stronger retaliation
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Sunday they had launched strikes against US military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain in response to American attacks on Iranian territory, warning that any further aggression would trigger a “crushing response.”
The claim came as Iran and the United States accused each other of violating a fragile ceasefire, putting renewed pressure on negotiations aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East.
The Guards said they had targeted and destroyed eight major US military facilities, including sites at Kuwait’s Ali Al-Salem air base and the Fifth Fleet naval base in Bahrain’s Port Salman.
“Any enemy aggression, regardless of the excuse, even against limited targets, will face a crushing response,” the Guards said.
A US-Iran memorandum of understanding, reached in mid-June through Pakistan’s mediation, called for both sides and their allies to avoid starting military operations and refrain from threats or the use of force against each other.
The latest escalation followed US strikes on Iran for a second straight day on Saturday, which Washington said were carried out in response to an Iranian attack on a tanker in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Under the agreement, Iran had committed to allowing commercial vessels safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days between the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
However, the Guards said new measures had been introduced to regulate shipping through the waterway, warning that vessels violating restrictions would face tougher action.
Iran had earlier warned ships against entering the strait without its approval. The warning came after Oman suggested an alternative route, while Iran said the only currently permitted passage runs through a corridor along its coastline.
