BJP Prepares for Possible Early Assembly Polls in Goa, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in several poll-bound states have begun preparing for the possibility that assembly elections could be held earlier than scheduled, amid concerns that the electoral exercise may overlap with the 2027 Census and create significant logistical challenges.
According to party leaders familiar with the discussions, elections in Goa, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh could be advanced by at least a month from their expected February 2027 timeline to avoid a clash with the population enumeration phase of the Census. Manipur, however, could see a different schedule because of continuing security concerns linked to ethnic tensions and periodic unrest.
The primary issue under consideration is the availability of manpower. Election duties and Census operations typically rely on the same pool of government employees, teachers and administrative staff, raising fears of a shortage if both exercises are conducted simultaneously.
The second phase of Census 2027, which includes population and caste enumeration, is scheduled for February 2027, coinciding with the period when several state assemblies are due for elections. Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur are scheduled to complete their terms in March 2027, while Uttar Pradesh’s assembly term ends in May that year.
Party leaders say advancing elections could ease pressure on officials responsible for both tasks. In Uttarakhand, BJP leaders have already floated the idea of holding polls in December to create a buffer before Census work intensifies.
The prospect of early elections has also generated political calculations beyond logistics. BJP leaders point to the party’s recent electoral momentum and broader discussions around synchronising elections as factors that make an earlier timetable more attractive.
In Punjab, preparations are already underway amid indications from both the BJP and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party that elections could be advanced. AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal recently suggested that the state could go to the polls as early as November, urging party workers to prepare accordingly.
The BJP’s Punjab unit has also been instructed to intensify its organisational efforts, with leaders indicating that the party intends to mount an aggressive campaign in a state where it is seeking to expand its footprint after the end of its alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal.
In Goa, party leaders believe an earlier election could help the BJP retain its advantage before opposition parties consolidate campaigns around environmental and land-related issues. Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP is aiming for a third consecutive term, leaders say the organisation is prepared for an accelerated electoral calendar and confident about its prospects.
While no formal decision has been taken, political parties across the affected states are increasingly factoring an early election scenario into their planning as authorities assess how to manage two of the country’s largest administrative exercises at the same time.
