Xi, Kim Agree to Deepen Ties, Safeguard Regional Peace After Pyongyang Summit
Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have agreed to strengthen bilateral relations and work together to safeguard regional and global peace following Xi’s landmark visit to Pyongyang, according to North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
In a message of thanks sent after concluding his two-day trip, Xi said the two leaders had held extensive discussions on issues of mutual concern and reached a series of important agreements that would help advance China-North Korea relations. He described the talks as a reflection of both countries’ commitment to deepening cooperation and maintaining close strategic ties.
Xi said he was prepared to continue working with Kim on the basis of the long-term interests of both nations, pledging efforts to strengthen, consolidate and expand bilateral relations while contributing to peace and development in the region and beyond.
Calling the visit a success, Xi said ties between Beijing and Pyongyang had entered “a new historical stage” and expressed hope for another meeting with Kim in the future.
The visit, Xi’s first trip to North Korea in seven years, took place from Monday to Tuesday. According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, the discussions helped both sides achieve a deeper understanding of each other’s priorities and chart a clearer path for future cooperation.
During the summit, Xi and Kim agreed to broaden collaboration in political affairs, trade, economic development and cultural exchanges. The two governments also pledged to strengthen strategic communication and coordination on key regional issues.
Chinese state media highlighted practical cooperation as a key driver of bilateral ties, identifying sectors such as agriculture, science and technology, and construction as areas for expanded partnership. Both countries also emphasized the importance of fully restoring cross-border connectivity, including passenger train services, civil aviation routes and other transportation links.
As part of the visit, Xi and Kim paid tribute at Pyongyang’s Sino-Korean Friendship Tower, which honors Chinese soldiers who fought in the Korean War. The leaders also toured a political training institution for ruling party officials, underscoring the close ideological and historical ties between the two neighboring nations.
