At least 24 killed in Afghanistan as heavy rain triggers deadly floods across multiple provinces
Heavy rain and flash floods have killed at least 24 people across Afghanistan in the past 48 hours, according to local and disaster officials.
The worst-hit area was the northern province of Baghlan, where 15 people died and dozens were injured, officials said. Two deaths were also reported in northeastern Badakhshan and one in central Wardak province as floodwaters swept through affected areas.
Authorities in Badakhshan said more than 100 homes were destroyed, while several people remain missing. The latest fatalities add to six deaths reported a day earlier in flood-related incidents across different provinces.
Afghanistan has been battered by severe weather since late March, with heavy rain causing widespread floods and landslides that have damaged homes, farmland and infrastructure. In April alone, at least 148 people were killed and 137 injured in weather-related disasters.
One of the world’s poorest countries after decades of conflict, Afghanistan remains highly vulnerable to climate-driven extreme weather and recurring natural disasters.
