Can CSK still make IPL 2026 playoffs? Chennai’s late surge keeps qualification hopes alive
After finishing bottom of the table in IPL 2025 for the first time in franchise history and opening this season with three straight defeats, Chennai Super Kings looked headed for another disappointing campaign.
Injuries, including one to MS Dhoni, and persistent bowling struggles raised familiar concerns over whether CSK could remain competitive in a post-Dhoni era.
But over the last month, Chennai have staged a remarkable turnaround.
Five wins in their last seven matches — including victories over Mumbai Indians twice and an away triumph against Delhi Capitals on Tuesday — have lifted them from the foot of the table to sixth place, reviving hopes of a playoff push.
Can Chennai qualify?
CSK currently have 10 points from 10 matches, just two behind second-placed Royal Challengers Bengaluru and three adrift of leaders Punjab Kings, though both sides have a game in hand.
They are also within touching distance of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans.
The playoff race remains tightly packed, but Chennai’s margin for error is slim.
They have four league games left:
- Two against struggling Lucknow Super Giants
- One home clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad
- One away fixture against Gujarat Titans
To guarantee qualification, CSK likely need to win all four and reach 18 points.
Even one defeat could leave them relying on net run rate and other results.
Reasons for optimism
Regardless of whether they qualify, Ruturaj Gaikwad has reasons to be encouraged.
In a season where Dhoni has not featured and uncertainty remains over his future, Chennai appear to have found a dependable finisher in Kartik Sharma, whose unbeaten knocks of 54 and 41 helped seal back-to-back wins.
The squad has also shown resilience amid injuries.
Gaikwad’s flexibility at the top, Sarfaraz Khan’s contributions in the middle order, and Dewald Brevis’ timely return have strengthened the batting unit.
Jamie Overton has emerged as one of Chennai’s standout all-round performers.
Sanju Samson leading the charge
A major factor behind CSK’s resurgence has been Sanju Samson.
Widely regarded as the backbone of Chennai’s batting this season, Samson has scored 402 runs in 10 matches, including two centuries and crucial knocks of 48 and 87.
His return to form has transformed Chennai’s fortunes.
Spin boost from Akeal Hosein
Akeal Hosein has added much-needed control to the bowling attack.
The left-arm spinner has taken seven wickets in five matches while maintaining an economy of just 7.24.
For now, CSK’s playoff hopes remain alive — but the road ahead leaves little room for mistakes.
