Ballu, the iconic anti-hero played by Sanjay Dutt in the 1993 cult film Khal Nayak, is set to return to the big screen. The actor on Friday announced Khalnayak Returns, describing it as a “fresh interpretation” of the original.

Sequel announced in Mumbai

At an event in Mumbai, Dutt revealed that his banner Three Dimension Motion Pictures, along with producer Aksha Kamboj’s Aspect Entertainment, has acquired the rights for the sequel from filmmaker Subhash Ghai and his company Mukta Arts.

A teaser unveiled at the event showed Dutt reprising Ballu in a rugged new avatar. The original Khal Nayak also starred Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit.

Dutt thanked Ghai for backing the project, calling him a “legend” and confirming his involvement in the new film.

Idea rooted in jail years

The actor shared that the idea for a sequel dates back to his time in jail in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. He said he gauged interest among fellow inmates, many of whom expressed enthusiasm and even contributed written ideas, which he later shared with Ghai.

Ghai, who was present at the event, praised Dutt’s passion and said he would support the project in any way possible.

Legacy of the original

Released in 1993, Khal Nayak became one of the biggest hits of the decade and went on to achieve cult status. It featured Dutt as Ballu, Shroff as a police officer, and Dixit as an undercover cop.

The makers have not clarified whether Khalnayak Returns will be a direct sequel, remake, or reimagined version. The script remains under wraps, with Jyoti Deshpande attached to creatively helm the project.
