Full Emergency at Delhi Airport After IndiGo Flight Reports Engine Trouble, Lands Safely
A full emergency was declared at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday after an IndiGo flight from Visakhapatnam to Delhi reported a suspected engine failure mid-air.
Flight 6E 579, operated by a Boeing 737-800 aircraft carrying 161 passengers, triggered emergency protocols shortly before landing. Runway 28 was placed on high alert as airport authorities and emergency services prepared for a potential crisis.
Despite the scare, the aircraft landed safely at around 11 am, and all passengers were evacuated without incident, according to sources.
Emergency Response Activated
Authorities received information about the situation at 10:53 am, prompting immediate action. Fire tenders were rushed to the scene, and all relevant agencies were put on standby.
“The flight made an emergency landing at Delhi airport. The fire department received information at 10:53 am and immediately dispatched fire tenders. The flight landed safely,” the Delhi Fire Services said in a statement.
No damage or injuries were reported.
Recent Similar Incidents
The incident comes just weeks after a similar emergency involving a SpiceJet flight from Delhi to Leh, which was forced to return due to an engine issue. That aircraft, also a Boeing 737, was carrying around 150 passengers.
Globally, there have been concerns over recurring issues linked to CFM56 engines used in Boeing 737 aircraft. In 2025, Aerolineas Argentinas grounded multiple Boeing 737-800 planes following similar technical concerns.
Saturday’s safe landing once again highlights the effectiveness of emergency response systems, even as scrutiny around aircraft engine reliability continues.
