Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma regularly communicate with Gautam Gambhir, discuss 2027 World Cup plans: India dismiss fallout rumours
India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak on Tuesday dismissed speculation of a communication gap between head coach Gautam Gambhir and senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, asserting that the duo frequently exchange ideas with the team management. His comments came ahead of the second ODI between India and New Zealand in Rajkot.
Kotak also confirmed that Rohit and Kohli have been involved in discussions about India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. “They discuss with Gautam about the ODI format, about the matches we have, and about our plans going to South Africa. Most of the time I’m there, and whenever I’m listening, they definitely share their experience. I always see them talking,” he said.
Media speculation in recent months had suggested friction between Gambhir and the former India captains, fueled in part by social media clips that appeared to show Kohli avoiding Gambhir. Kotak, however, rejected these claims as baseless. “Obviously, on social media, you see a lot of things, which I try to avoid seeing,” he said.
Emphasizing the professionalism of the senior players, Kotak added: “Both of them are so senior and experienced. They definitely make plans. They want to practice at all the venues. If they feel they need to, they’ll go a couple of days in advance. They practice because they know they’re playing one format, and they want India to win everywhere when they are performing.”
Kotak praised their preparation and leadership, noting that their experience allows them to guide other players as well. “They are thorough professionals. They know what their body needs, not only in batting, but in fitness and overall requirements. They can share a lot of ideas with other players, and they do discuss,” he said.
The clarification comes as India looks to strengthen its ODI setup ahead of upcoming international fixtures and the 2027 World Cup.
