Germany allows visa-free airport transit for Indians: What it means

1

In a move aimed at strengthening India–Germany ties, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday announced that Indian travellers will no longer require a transit visa at German airports. The announcement was made during Merz’s visit to Gujarat.

The decision is expected to make international travel easier for Indian nationals and boost people-to-people exchanges between New Delhi and Berlin.

What is a transit visa?
A transit visa is a short-term permit that allows travellers to pass through a country during a layover while travelling to a third destination. It typically requires proof of onward travel and confirmation that the traveller does not intend to stay in the country.

What does visa-free transit mean for Indians?
Under the new policy, Indian nationals transiting through German airports such as Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin will no longer need to apply for a Schengen transit visa, provided they remain within the international transit area.

Previously, Indian travellers were required to obtain a transit visa even if they did not enter Germany or the wider Schengen area. The exemption will now simplify layovers and connections through German airports.

However, Indians will still need to apply for the appropriate visa — tourist, business or student — if they plan to enter Germany or any other Schengen country.

India-Germany cooperation
Alongside the visa-free transit announcement, India and Germany unveiled a series of measures to deepen economic, defence and security cooperation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Germany’s decision to simplify defence export procedures, saying it reflected growing trust between the two countries. “The growing cooperation in defence and security is a symbol of our mutual trust and shared vision,” Modi said during a joint press conference with Chancellor Merz.
