Lionel Messi Reveals Retirement Plans: ‘I’d Prefer to Be an Owner Than a Manager’
Lionel Messi is approaching the twilight of his career, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup is widely expected to be his final tournament for Argentina, the defending champions. The Argentine captain, now 38, has not yet confirmed whether he will feature in the global showpiece.
Messi enjoyed a sensational 2025 season with Inter Miami, finishing as the MLS Golden Boot winner with 29 goals and 19 assists in 28 appearances. He also signed a new three-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2028, when he will be 41.
The season proved historic for Inter Miami as Messi led the club to its first-ever MLS Cup title in 2025. He provided two assists in the final and was named MLS Cup MVP. In addition, Messi claimed the MLS MVP award, becoming the first player in league history to win the honour in consecutive seasons.
Speaking recently in an interview with Luzu TV, Messi opened up about his post-playing plans and ruled out a move into coaching. “I don’t see myself as a coach,” he said.
“I like the idea of being a manager, but I’d prefer to be an owner. I’d like to have my own club, start from the bottom and help it grow—giving young players the opportunity to develop and achieve something important. If I had to choose, that’s what would appeal to me most,” Messi added.
Following his move to Inter Miami, Messi reportedly secured a future minority ownership stake in the MLS club. He has also supported former teammate Luis Suárez in launching a new fourth-division club in Uruguay, Deportivo LSM.
At the 2026 World Cup, Argentina have been drawn in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria and Jordan. Should Messi decide to feature, his presence would be a massive boost for Lionel Scaloni’s squad, which includes several players who grew up idolising the Argentine legend.
