US Embassy, Consulates in India Closed From Today; Services to Resume on December 26
The US Embassy and Consulates in India will remain closed from Wednesday, December 24, to Friday, December 26, 2025, in line with a US Presidential Executive Order. Routine consular services will not be available during this period.
The closure follows an executive order issued by US President Donald Trump granting Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas as days off for most federal employees.
Announcing the decision on X, the US Embassy in India said: “The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India will be closed from Wednesday, December 24, 2025, to Friday, December 26, 2025, in accordance with the Presidential Executive Order providing for the closure of executive departments.”
Consular services are scheduled to resume after the holiday break.
According to the executive order, all executive departments and federal agencies will be closed on December 24 and December 26, with employees excused from duty. The order allows department heads to keep certain offices open for reasons of national security, defence or other public needs.
The move is intended to provide a holiday break for federal employees and follows similar decisions by Trump during his previous terms in 2018, 2019 and 2020. President Joe Biden also granted Christmas Eve off to federal workers in 2024.
Christmas Day is already a federal holiday in the United States, one of 11 official holidays that also include New Year’s Day, Memorial Day and Labor Day.
