Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday and announced a massive US$17.5 billion investment to accelerate India’s transition toward an “AI-first future.” Nadella described the meeting as an “inspiring conversation on India’s AI opportunity,” calling the investment Microsoft’s largest-ever in Asia.

In a post on X, Nadella wrote:

“Thank you, PM @narendramodi ji, for an inspiring conversation on India’s AI opportunity. To support the country’s ambitions, Microsoft is committing US$17.5B—our largest investment ever in Asia—to help build the infrastructure, skills, and sovereign capabilities needed for India’s AI-first future.”

Modi Welcomes Major Tech Commitment

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the announcement, saying global confidence in India’s AI potential was rising. Calling his discussion with Nadella “very productive,” he praised Microsoft’s decision to scale up its presence in the country.

“When it comes to AI, the world is optimistic about India! Had a very productive discussion with Mr. Satya Nadella. Happy to see India being the place where Microsoft will make its largest-ever investment in Asia,” Modi posted on X. He added that India’s youth would “harness this opportunity to innovate and leverage the power of AI for a better planet.”

A Big Bet on India’s AI Future

The investment marks Nadella’s second major commitment to India this year. During a January visit, he met PM Modi and soon after announced a $3 billion plan focused on cloud and AI infrastructure, including the establishment of new data centres.

“India is rapidly becoming a leader in AI innovation, unlocking new opportunity across the country,” Nadella said at the time, noting Microsoft’s aim to help “make India AI-first.”

India Becomes a Global AI Battleground

India has emerged as a key strategic market for global tech giants seeking new users, deeper digital infrastructure, and a large AI talent pool.

In October, Google announced a $15 billion investment to build a major AI-focused data centre hub in Andhra Pradesh—its largest AI hub outside the US. The 1-gigawatt data centre campus in Visakhapatnam aims to anchor Google’s long-term AI ambitions in India.

With Microsoft and Google committing tens of billions of dollars, India is positioned to become one of the world’s most competitive AI development centres in the coming decade.
