Trump says Xi, Putin assured him they won’t supply weapons to Iran

US President Donald Trump on Friday said he believes China and Russia are not providing military support to Iran amid the ongoing West Asia conflict, warning that any such involvement would be “very bad” and contrary to their own interests.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping had personally assured him during their recent meeting in Beijing that China would not supply weapons to Iran, either directly or through Chinese companies.

“President Xi… told me that he would not, under any circumstances, give or sell weapons to the Islamic Republic of Iran — and that statement included Chinese companies,” Trump wrote, adding that he trusted Xi’s commitment.

Trump also claimed Russian President Vladimir Putin had given similar assurances, saying Moscow would not sell weapons to Tehran.

“President Putin… told me that he would not sell weapons to Iran. He understands that I do not sell weapons to Ukraine, but to NATO countries,” Trump said.

The US president concluded that, in his view, “two major countries” often linked to Iran were not participating in supporting Tehran.

“If they did, it would be very bad for them—certainly not in their best interests,” he added.

Speaking later at the White House, Trump reiterated his confidence in both leaders.

“I don’t know that they’re enabling Iran. I think I trust them,” he told reporters.

Trump’s comments contrasted with testimony earlier this week from US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who told lawmakers that Russia and China were helping Iran in unspecified ways.

“There are ways in which both of those countries are, at different levels, enabling some of the things Iran is doing,” Hegseth said during a Senate hearing.

According to Reuters, US intelligence agencies have examined whether Russia may have shared targeting information or drone technology with Iran following Iranian strikes on CIA-linked facilities in the Gulf. The Kremlin declined to comment on the reports.

The United States has previously imposed sanctions on Russian and Chinese individuals and companies accused of assisting Iran’s weapons procurement. Separate media reports have also alleged that Russia provided satellite imagery and that Iran may have used Chinese missile systems, radar, and satellite data during the conflict, though those claims have not been officially confirmed.
