Bypoll Results for Eight Assembly Seats Across Six States, J&K to Be Declared Today
The Election Commission of India will announce the results of bypolls held in eight assembly constituencies across six states and the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir on Friday. Voting took place on November 11, and counting began at 8 am alongside the Bihar Assembly election results.
The bypolls were conducted in Budgam and Nagrota (J&K), Dampa (Mizoram), Anta (Rajasthan), Ghatshila (Jharkhand), Jubilee Hills (Telangana), Nuapada (Odisha), and Tarn Taran (Punjab).
Voter turnout
According to the ECI, Dampa (82.34%) and Anta (80.32%) recorded the highest turnout. Other constituencies saw: Nagrota at 75.08%, Ghatshila 74.63%, Nuapada 79.02%, Tarn Taran 60.95%, Budgam 50.05%, and Jubilee Hills 48.24%.
Why bypolls were held
Most of the by-elections were necessitated by the death of sitting MLAs. In Budgam, the bypoll was triggered by J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s resignation from the seat after choosing to retain Ganderbal. In Rajasthan’s Anta, the bypoll followed the disqualification of BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena, who was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison for pointing a pistol at a sub-divisional magistrate.
