Mohsin Naqvi meets Pakistan squad ahead of WTC 2025-27 series against South Africa
Since the Asia Cup presentation ceremony controversy, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has been at the centre of cricketing discussions. On Thursday, two days before Pakistan begins its WTC 2025-27 campaign against South Africa, Naqvi visited the Gaddafi Stadium to meet the team.
Accompanied by Director of the High-Performance Centre Aqib Javed, Naqvi interacted with captain Shan Masood and the squad during their training session. He was also seen greeting spinner Abrar Ahmed, who recently married in Karachi, as well as members of the South African team management.
Boosting morale before a crucial campaign
The timing of Naqvi’s visit carries significance. Pakistan ended the previous WTC cycle at the bottom, winning only five of 14 matches with a PCT of 27.98. The team also suffered a clean sweep loss against India in the Asia Cup 2025, including the final.
Returning to Test cricket after a 120-run defeat to West Indies in Multan, Pakistan sees this series as a chance for a fresh start. In contrast, South Africa, the defending champions, secured the top spot in the last cycle with a PCT of 69.44 and went on to beat Australia to claim the Test mace. The upcoming subcontinental conditions, where spin often decides outcomes, will test both sides.
Naqvi’s message to the team
During his visit, Naqvi discussed plans and strategies with the team leadership. He assured Masood and coach Azhar Mahmood of full operational autonomy, stating, “My full support is with you for the Test series against South Africa,” signaling the board’s confidence in the squad.
For a team that struggled in the last WTC cycle, the chairman’s visit is more than a formality. It is a message of backing and belief that this campaign could be different. With the first ball set to be bowled on Sunday, the PCB’s intent is clear: the current squad has the board’s full support to turn their fortunes around.
