Asia Cup: Haris Rauf Fined for Abusive Gestures, Farhan Let Off with Warning
Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf has been fined 30% of his match fee for using abusive language and making aggressive gestures during the Super 4 clash against India in the Asia Cup. His teammate Sahibzada Farhan, who celebrated his half-century with a ‘gun-fire’ gesture, was handed only a warning.
The disciplinary hearing was conducted at Pakistan’s team hotel by match referee Richie Richardson, with both players and team manager Naveed Akram Cheema present.
The action followed a formal complaint from the BCCI, accusing the two of provocative behaviour. Tensions between India and Pakistan have been running high in the tournament, with both teams refusing handshakes and engaging in heated exchanges during the group and Super 4 matches.
According to reports, Rauf responded to Indian fans chanting “Kohli, Kohli” by mimicking a plane crash—seen as mocking India’s military operations—and also had verbal altercations with batters Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma. Farhan, meanwhile, downplayed his controversial celebration, saying it was done “in the heat of the moment.”
This incident comes after Pakistan filed a separate complaint against India captain Suryakumar Yadav over his remarks dedicating India’s group-stage win to the Pahalgam terror victims and the Armed Forces. Though he denied any wrongdoing, the ICC reportedly asked him to refrain from political comments for the rest of the tournament.
India and Pakistan are now set to clash in the Asia Cup final on Sunday—the first time the arch-rivals will meet in a continental tournament decider.
