CP Radhakrishnan’s Election as Vice President: Signals Beyond the Numbers
The election of BJP-led NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan as India’s 15th Vice President on Tuesday was no surprise — the ruling alliance had the numbers firmly on its side. Yet, the choice carries political signals that extend well beyond New Delhi.
By picking a veteran from Tamil Nadu, the BJP has underlined its push to expand in the South ahead of next year’s state polls. Radhakrishnan also represents lifelong loyalty to the RSS, marking a clear contrast with outgoing Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, whose political career spanned multiple parties before he joined the BJP. His OBC background further adds to the messaging.
The Contest
The Opposition INDIA bloc fielded former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, a Telugu leader, positioning the contest as a battle of ideology and accusing the BJP of being “anti-Constitution.” But the outcome was never in doubt: Radhakrishnan secured 452 votes against Reddy’s 300. As expected, the contest was more symbolic than competitive, given the largely ceremonial nature of the Vice President’s office, which also involves chairing the Rajya Sabha.
The Political Journey
A lifelong RSS worker, Radhakrishnan began his political career in Coimbatore, winning two Lok Sabha terms in the late 1990s when BJP alliances with the AIADMK and DMK made inroads possible. Known for his conciliatory style, he was nicknamed the “Vajpayee of Coimbatore.” Though he lost subsequent parliamentary races, he was later appointed governor of Jharkhand and Maharashtra by the Modi government.
Unlike Dhankhar, who moved across parties before settling with the BJP, Radhakrishnan has remained firmly embedded in the Sangh Parivar ecosystem. His soft-spoken, inclusive style, colleagues say, makes him well suited for the Rajya Sabha chair.
The Broader Message
Radhakrishnan’s rise signals the BJP’s intent to strengthen its base in Tamil Nadu, particularly among the influential Gounder OBC community. It also highlights the party’s attempt to project regional diversity at the national level, with the South gaining visibility in top constitutional posts after a gap since Venkaiah Naidu’s vice-presidency.
For the BJP, the move ticks several boxes at once — loyalty to the Sangh, OBC consolidation, and southern outreach — making Radhakrishnan’s ascent more strategic than ceremonial.
