BCCI Set for Leadership Change; Legendary Cricketer Eyed as Next President
The BCCI is preparing for a major leadership transition later this month, with reports suggesting that a legendary Indian cricketer is under consideration for the president’s post, according to Dainik Jagran. If confirmed, this would continue the trend of former players leading the Board, following Sourav Ganguly in 2019 and 1983 World Cup winner Roger Binny, who recently stepped down upon reaching the BCCI’s 70-year age limit.
Vice-president Rajeev Shukla is currently acting as president, while official elections for president, secretary, vice-president, joint secretary, treasurer, and IPL chairman are scheduled during the BCCI Annual General Meeting in the last week of September. Informal discussions with the cricketer reportedly took place during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England, signaling serious intent from influential quarters.
Insiders expect the elections to be largely uncontested, following precedent where key posts were filled by consensus among major stakeholders and political influencers. Current office bearers such as Joint Secretary Devajit Saikia, Treasurer Prabhtej Bhatia, and Joint Secretary Rohan Gauns Desai are likely to continue, while the upcoming National Sports Governance Act may eventually reshape BCCI rules.
The IPL chairman race is also gaining attention, with names like Sanjay Naik and Rajeev Shukla in contention. Shukla’s move could open the vice-president role to BJP leader and Bihar Cricket Association head Rakesh Tiwari. Binny’s exit has created a high-profile vacancy, and the Board may soon see one of India’s iconic cricketers assume its top leadership position.
