Australia Poised to Recognize Palestinian State as Early as Monday: Report

Australia may formally recognize a Palestinian state as soon as Monday, following similar moves by France, Britain, and Canada, the Sydney Morning Herald reported, citing unnamed sources.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese could approve the decision after a routine cabinet meeting. His office has not commented on the report.

France and Canada announced last month they would recognize a Palestinian state, while Britain has said it will do so unless Israel addresses the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and agrees to a ceasefire.

Israel has condemned such moves, arguing they reward Hamas, the militant group governing Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said most Israelis oppose a Palestinian state, believing it would lead to war rather than peace. Speaking Sunday, he called the decisions by European nations and potentially Australia “disappointing” and “shameful,” insisting they would not alter Israel’s stance.

The remarks came as thousands protested in Tel Aviv against Netanyahu’s plans to intensify the nearly two-year war and seize Gaza City.

Albanese’s government backs a two-state solution, supporting Israel’s right to secure borders alongside Palestinians’ right to self-determination. Treasurer Jim Chalmers said last month recognition was “a matter of when, not if.”
