Ukrainian Drone Strike Sparks Fire, Disrupts Rail and Air Traffic in Russia’s Volgograd Region
A Ukrainian drone attack overnight damaged critical infrastructure in Russia’s southern Volgograd region, igniting a fire and disrupting transportation, regional officials said Monday.
According to a statement from the Volgograd regional administration on Telegram, the strike damaged a power line and caused a fire at a railway station building. An unexploded drone was also found on railway tracks near the Archeda train station, though authorities reported no damage to the tracks themselves.
Governor Andrei Bocharov described the attack as “massive,” saying it was aimed at the region’s energy and transport infrastructure. Several regional train services were delayed, Russian state news agency TASS reported.
The impact extended to air traffic as well. Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, said that flights at Volgograd’s regional airport were suspended for several hours and later resumed around 0300 GMT.
The full extent of the damage has yet to be determined. There was no immediate comment from Ukrainian officials, and Reuters noted it could not independently verify the reports.
Ukraine has frequently targeted infrastructure inside Russia it considers critical to Moscow’s military operations, including sites in the Volgograd region, which is situated relatively close to the Ukrainian border.
