Fire Near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Contained After Ukrainian Shelling, Says Russian-Installed Administration
A fire that erupted near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant following Ukrainian shelling has been brought under control, according to the Russian-installed administration overseeing the facility in Russian-occupied Ukraine.
The Zaporizhzhia plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility, has been under Russian control since the early weeks of Moscow’s February 2022 invasion. Both Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused each other of endangering the plant through shelling and other actions that could lead to a nuclear disaster.
In a statement posted on Telegram, the plant’s administration claimed that a civilian was killed in the incident. However, no injuries were reported among plant staff or emergency personnel.
While Reuters was unable to independently verify the Russian account, the administration stated that radiation levels remained within normal limits, and the situation was under control.
Though the plant is currently not operational, it still needs external power to cool its nuclear fuel and prevent overheating. The ongoing conflict continues to raise international concerns about the plant’s safety.
