Anurag Basu’s latest offering Metro… In Dino has finally hit theatres but has opened to a relatively modest response, both commercially and critically. Despite being backed by an ensemble cast including Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Ali Fazal, the film saw limited footfall on its opening day.
Trade analysts reported a Day 1 collection of approximately ₹3 crore across India, which is below expectations for a film of this scale and pedigree. The performance was slightly better in metros such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru, where audiences traditionally support niche urban dramas. However, the film struggled to attract viewers in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
As a spiritual successor to Basu’s 2007 cult classic Life in a… Metro, the film explores themes of love, heartbreak, and personal transformation set against the backdrop of a modern city. Each character’s storyline weaves through a shared emotional landscape, attempting to capture the complexity of urban relationships.
Despite its thematic depth and well-shot sequences, critics have pointed out a lack of the novelty and emotional punch that made the original so impactful. The music, composed by Pritam, has received positive reviews, but it hasn’t been able to drive footfall in theatres.
The weekend will be crucial for the film. Positive word-of-mouth could improve its trajectory, but with tough competition from mainstream entertainers and action films, Metro… In Dino faces an uphill battle to become a commercial hit.
