Sunny Deol Opens Up About Industry Rejections: Big Studios Hesitated to Work with Him and Dharmendra

Sunny Deol, one of Bollywood’s most iconic action heroes, has recently made a candid revelation about the challenges he and his legendary father Dharmendra have faced within the Indian film industry. Speaking in an interview, Sunny shared that several big production houses were reluctant to work with them, despite their towering legacies and contributions to Indian cinema.

Industry Rejection Despite Legacy

Sunny Deol, who made a spectacular comeback with Gadar 2 in 2023, explained that for a long period, he and his family were sidelined by leading banners and studios. “We come from a background where we don’t know how to play politics in the industry. Big studios hesitated to work with us. No matter what we did, we weren’t scared—but yes, people hesitated,” said Sunny. His statement reflects the struggles faced by even the most established names when navigating the evolving power dynamics of Bollywood.

Fearless But Isolated

Sunny Deol emphasized that he never compromised on his principles or artistry, and that often came at a cost. “Kuch bhi karte hain toh hum darte nahin,” he said, meaning, “Whatever we do, we do it fearlessly.” However, he admitted that this fearless attitude may have contributed to him being perceived as difficult or unapproachable by some influential names in the industry.

A Common Pattern?

This is not the first time Sunny has touched upon this topic. Previously, the actor had spoken about Bollywood’s insider culture and its preference for ‘camp-based’ collaborations, which often exclude independent or outspoken voices. Even Dharmendra, despite being one of Indian cinema’s most beloved stars, has faced periods of professional isolation.

The Resurgence with Gadar 2

Sunny’s blockbuster Gadar 2 changed the narrative. The film was one of the highest-grossing Hindi movies of 2023, reviving not just his career but also renewing interest in the Deol brand of cinema. The massive success demonstrated that audience loyalty and star power can still override industry gatekeeping.
