Doctor Lists 4 Warning Signs of Nutritional Deficiency—From Brittle Nails to Muscle Twitches and Joint Stiffness

Our bodies often give us early warnings when something is off — but these signs are easy to overlook. Recognizing them could help detect nutritional deficiencies before they lead to more serious health issues.

Dr. Kunal Sood, an anesthesiology and interventional pain medicine specialist, highlighted several such signs in an Instagram post on June 12, urging people to pay closer attention to what their bodies may be trying to tell them.

“These signs don’t confirm a deficiency on their own,” Dr. Sood noted, “but they are worth paying attention to, especially if they persist.”

Common Signs of Nutrient Deficiencies to Watch For

1. Brittle or Cracking Nails
Dry weather isn’t always to blame for fragile nails. Dr. Sood explained that iron deficiency could be the culprit, as iron helps carry oxygen to nail beds. Low iron can result in weakened nail structure.

2. Muscle Twitching or Cramps
Frequent eye or muscle twitches might be more than just fatigue. Dr. Sood linked them to low magnesium levels, which help regulate nerve signals. A deficiency may cause nerves to misfire, leading to spasms.

3. Joint Stiffness or Clicking Joints
Stiff or clicking joints could be a sign of vitamin D or calcium deficiency, both crucial for bone and cartilage health. Without sufficient levels, smooth movement can become difficult.

4. Premature Greying Hair
While genetics often play the biggest role in early greying, low vitamin B12 or copper levels may also contribute by affecting pigment production, according to Dr. Sood.

Final Advice

Dr. Sood emphasized the importance of listening to your body and not ignoring recurring or unusual changes. While these signs don’t offer a definitive diagnosis, they may serve as early clues prompting further evaluation by a healthcare professional.

“Being aware of subtle shifts can help you take early action to maintain your health and well-being,” he said.
