“Harvard-Trained Gastroenterologist Reveals Worst Foods That Could Increase Cancer Risk: What to Avoid”

While no single food can directly cause cancer, certain dietary habits can significantly elevate the risk. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a renowned gastroenterologist from California trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford, took to Instagram on June 9 to shed light on the foods that are most closely linked to cancer.

In his post, Dr. Sethi shared his insights on what he believes are the worst foods for cancer risk and why they should be avoided for better long-term health.

“Did you know that some of the most common everyday foods are scientifically linked to increased cancer risk? Here are some major culprits you should reduce or eliminate from your diet, especially if you’re serious about long-term health,” Dr. Sethi wrote in the caption.

Worst Food for Overall Cancer Risk: Ultra-Processed Meats

Items like sausages, hot dogs, bacon, and deli meats fall under this category. Rich in preservatives and additives like nitrates and nitrites, ultra-processed meats are classified as Group 1 carcinogens by the World Health Organization (WHO)—the same category as tobacco.

Worst Food for Cancer Progression: Sugary Drinks

Regularly consuming sodas, energy drinks, and sweetened beverages can spike insulin levels, cause weight gain, and increase inflammation, all of which create an environment conducive to cancer cell growth and progression.

Worst Food for Inflammation: Deep-Fried Foods

Deep-fried foods, especially those fried in reused or highly processed oils, produce harmful compounds like acrylamide and trans fats. These compounds contribute to inflammation and oxidative stress in the body, both of which are linked to a higher cancer risk.

Worst Food for DNA Damage: Charred or Burnt Meats

Cooking meats at high temperatures, especially on an open flame, creates carcinogenic compounds such as heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These substances can damage DNA and increase the risk of cancerous mutations.

Worst Food for Hormone-Related Cancers: Alcohol

Even moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with an increased risk of cancers like breast, liver, and colorectal. Alcohol disrupts hormone levels, particularly estrogen, and produces acetaldehyde—a toxic byproduct that can damage DNA.

Worst Food for Chronic Inflammation: Ultra-Processed Foods

Packaged snacks, ready-to-eat meals, instant noodles, and sugary cereals often contain high levels of refined carbohydrates, added sugars, and industrial seed oils. These ingredients drive systemic inflammation, which is a known precursor to many chronic illnesses, including cancer.
