The final journey of popular singer Zubeen Garg began on Tuesday from the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, where his body had been kept since Sunday for fans, well-wishers, and celebrities to pay homage.

Later, his mortal remains were taken to the cremation site in Kamarkuchi, where Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, family members, and friends paid their last respects.

Thousands of grieving fans sang Garg’s popular song ‘Mayabini’, fulfilling his wish that the song be played after his death. His body was transported in a flower-decked ambulance, draped in the traditional Assamese gamosa and placed inside a cold glass coffin. A large black-and-white portrait of the singer led the cortege, while his 85-year-old father and wife Garima Saikia followed in separate vehicles. Garg will be cremated with full state honours at Kamarkuchi village, about 20 km from the sports complex.

Earlier in the day, a second post-mortem was conducted at Gauhati Medical College Hospital with doctors from AIIMS-Guwahati present. CM Sarma stated that, while he personally did not endorse a second post-mortem, the state consented to it due to public sentiment.

Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore at the age of 52 on September 19, two days after arriving to participate in the Northeast India Festival, due to drowning while swimming at sea.
