Zelensky Hopes Democratic Victory in US Midterms Will Bring Greater Support for Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed hope that the Democrats’ sweeping gains in the US midterm elections will translate into increased military and financial assistance for Kyiv as it continues its war against Russia.
In an interview with Germany’s ZDF television on Wednesday, Zelensky said the Democrats’ decision to take control of both chambers of Congress next year could create more favourable conditions for Ukraine.
He acknowledged Republican support but noted that Democratic lawmakers had consistently advocated stronger assistance for Ukraine and closer cooperation between the United States and Europe.
Zelensky said he hoped the political changes in Washington would establish a new balance of power and lead to greater support for his country.
He also suggested that stronger American financial and military assistance, alongside Europe’s continued backing, could influence Russian President Vladimir Putin’s calculations.
According to ZDF, Zelensky said increased support from Congress would send a positive signal to Moscow.
Zelensky Seeks Stronger Ties with Washington
The Ukrainian president has made repeated efforts to maintain a working relationship with US President Donald Trump, despite tensions between the two leaders.
Their relationship faced a major setback during a meeting in the Oval Office in February 2025, when Zelensky was criticised by Trump and his allies over his response to American assistance.
More recently, Trump has taken several steps viewed as favourable to Russia, including an agreement involving Russian diesel imports and moves to ease sanctions.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to end the war are expected to resume. US-led trilateral negotiations involving Ukraine and Russia are scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11.
US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff announced on Monday that representatives from the three countries would meet to discuss ending the conflict, post-war security arrangements and measures to reduce military tensions.
The planned discussions would mark a resumption of negotiations following a gap of several months.
Zelensky Comments on Starlink and Elon Musk
During the ZDF interview, Zelensky also discussed Ukraine’s reliance on the Starlink satellite internet network operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
He expressed appreciation for the connectivity provided by SpaceX, particularly during the early stages of Russia’s full-scale invasion, but made clear that he disagreed with Musk’s position on the war.
Starlink and its military-oriented Starshield system have played an important role in supporting Ukraine’s military communications, including operations involving attack and air defence drones.
Last week, Zelensky said the satellite services had returned to operational levels seen before restrictions were introduced.
Trump denied having any involvement in the decision concerning the slowdown in the satellite services.
As Ukraine continues to seek international backing, Zelensky is hoping that the changing political balance in Washington will help secure sustained American assistance and strengthen Kyiv’s position in future negotiations with Moscow.
