With Bihar Assembly Term Ending Nov 22, NDA Set to Begin Government Formation Talks
With the current Bihar Legislative Assembly’s term ending on November 22, attention has now shifted to the formation of the next government. After the BJP and Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) emerged as the two largest parties, speculation is growing over whether Nitish will be sworn in as chief minister for a record tenth time — and how cabinet portfolios will be divided among NDA partners.
The National Democratic Alliance registered a sweeping victory on Friday, winning 202 of 243 seats — the second time it has crossed the 200-seat mark since 2010.
LJP (Ram Vilas) chief and Union Minister Chirag Paswan said the government would be in place before November 22. The LJP(RV), which won 19 seats, said discussions among alliance partners are underway.
Chirag Paswan on government formation
Paswan met Nitish Kumar in Patna on Saturday, describing the meeting as “cordial and constructive.” He said consultations with senior Union Ministers were ongoing and that a “blueprint” for the next government would be prepared within a day or two.
“We have to form the government before 22nd November. It will be done,” he said, adding that clarity would emerge once the detailed plan was finalized.
Paswan also praised Nitish Kumar’s leadership and accused the Opposition of spreading “false narratives” about the JD(U)–LJP(RV) equations during the campaign.
Rashtriya Lok Morcha leader Upendra Kushwaha said earlier today that the picture would become clearer in the “next two to four days,” urging people to “wait a little.”
Government formation to begin in 2–3 days
According to NDA sources, the formal process of government formation will begin once all newly elected MLAs, many still in their constituencies, assemble in Patna. Parties have already started meetings with their legislators.
Before the formation process begins, Nitish Kumar is expected to meet Governor Arif Mohammad Khan to submit his resignation and discuss the timeline for the swearing-in ceremony.
The NDA’s decisive mandate saw the BJP emerge as the single-largest party with 89 seats, while Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) made a strong comeback with 85. The LJP(RV) secured 19 seats, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) won 5, and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha took 4.
