The counting of votes for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections concluded on Friday, with results declared for all 227 wards by the State Election Commission. Polling was held on Thursday after a nearly four-year delay, with a voter turnout of 52.94%.

In the final results of the 2026 BMC elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party, winning 89 seats. Shiv Sena (UBT) secured 65 wards, while the Shinde-led Shiv Sena won 29. The Congress finished with 24 seats.

Ward-wise winners

The State Election Commission released ward-wise results as counting concluded. Among the early winners were Rekha Yadav of Shiv Sena from Ward 1, Tejaswini Ghosalkar of the BJP from Ward 2, Prakash Darekar of the BJP from Ward 3, and Mangesh Pangare of Shiv Sena from Ward 4.

Voting after long delay

The previous BMC elections were held in 2017, with the next cycle originally scheduled for 2022. However, the polls were postponed due to multiple factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, disputes over the delimitation of wards, and legal challenges related to reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in local body elections.

After the prolonged delay, voters returned to polling booths across Mumbai, with over 54 lakh people casting their ballots, according to the State Election Commission.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the outcome, praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a video message shared on social media platform X.

“I am very happy that the Bharatiya Janata Party has achieved an unprecedented victory in Maharashtra. The BJP and our alliance partners have secured a clear majority in about 25 of the 29 places, including Mumbai,” he said.
