A Hindu man was lynched to death in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh amid unrest following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, prompting the arrest of at least 10 people, interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus said on Saturday.

Condemning the attack, the interim administration said there was “no space for such violence in new Bangladesh,” and vowed that those responsible would not be spared.

Who was Dipu Chandra Das

The victim was identified as Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old Hindu garment factory worker. According to PTI, he was attacked on Thursday night in the Bhaluka area of Mymensingh over alleged blasphemy. The mob reportedly beat him, tied him to a tree, and set his body on fire.

Dipu was employed at the Pioneer Knit Composite Factory in the Square Masterbari area, NDTV reported.

Speaking to the news channel, his father Ravilal Das said the family first learned about the incident through social media.
“We saw it on Facebook. From Facebook we started hearing things, then more people were saying it,” he said. “Later, someone told me my son was beaten badly and tied to a tree.”

He added that the mob poured kerosene on Dipu and set him on fire, leaving his burned body outside. “It was horrible,” he said.

10 arrested, says Yunus

Muhammad Yunus said 10 people have been arrested in connection with the lynching. “Of the 10, seven were arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and three by the police,” he said in a post on X.

Authorities carried out raids at multiple locations to detain the suspects, aged between 19 and 46, as investigations continue.
