Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from his post with immediate effect, citing health concerns and the need to follow medical advice. Dhankhar, who assumed office in 2022, tendered his resignation in a letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu under Article 67(a) of the Constitution.

Before becoming Vice President, Dhankhar served as the Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022.

What Jagdeep Dhankhar Said

In his resignation letter, Dhankhar wrote,

“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”

He expressed profound gratitude to President Murmu for her “unwavering support” and “wonderful working relationship” during his tenure.

“I extend my deepest gratitude to Your Excellency – the Hon’ble President of India…,” he wrote, calling his time in office “a true honour.”

He also acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Council of Ministers:

“The Prime Minister’s cooperation and support have been invaluable, and I have learned much during my time in office.”

Dhankhar thanked Members of Parliament, appreciating their warmth, trust, and affection:

“These would ever be cherished and embedded in my memory,” he said.

Reflecting on his tenure, Dhankhar wrote:

“It has been a privilege to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and exponential development during this transformative era.”

He concluded with a note of optimism:

“As I demit this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements, and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future.”

What Happens Next

The Indian Constitution does not explicitly mention who should act as Vice President in the event of a mid-term vacancy. However, in terms of Rajya Sabha functioning — where the Vice President serves as Chairperson — the Deputy Chairperson or a member authorised by the President can perform those duties temporarily.

Dhankhar’s sudden departure leaves the office of Vice President vacant until a new appointment is made.
