Uttarkashi Cloudburst Triggers Deadly Flash Floods; 4 Dead, Dozens Missing as Rescue Efforts Intensify
At least four people have lost their lives and several others are missing after two powerful cloudbursts triggered flash floods in Uttarkashi district on Tuesday, wreaking havoc across the region. The worst-hit area, Dharali village — located en route to the Gangotri pilgrimage site — witnessed large-scale destruction as torrents of water swept away homes, shops, guesthouses, and major infrastructure.
Despite relentless rainfall and difficult terrain, rescue teams comprising the Army, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police managed to save 70 people by midnight, according to officials.
Massive Destruction in Dharali and Sukhi Top
Two separate cloudbursts were reported — one in Dharali and another in Sukhi Top, both unleashing widespread chaos. Dharali bore the brunt of the disaster, with visuals showing muddy floodwaters tearing through the village, leaving it submerged under debris and sludge.
Authorities estimate that 20 to 25 hotels and guesthouses have been swept away or destroyed, and a large section of the Dharali market has been completely washed out. The initial flash floods were reportedly triggered by a cloudburst in the Kheer Ganga catchment, followed by landslides in the Kheer Gadh area.

“Prime Minister Modi has assured full assistance from the Centre. I thank Home Minister Amit Shah as well for his immediate response,” Dhami stated.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “I express my condolences to those affected by the tragedy in Dharali, Uttarkashi. I have spoken to CM Dhami and taken stock of the situation.”

Emergency teams remain on high alert as several people are still unaccounted for. The affected regions continue to experience rainfall, making rescue operations more difficult and raising concerns about further landslides.
With entire villages damaged and livelihoods destroyed, Uttarakhand now faces the dual challenge of saving those still stranded and beginning the long road to recovery.
