US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday greeted the people of India on their Independence Day, calling relations between the world’s largest and oldest democracies “consequential and far-reaching.”

Rubio said the two nations share a vision for a peaceful, prosperous Indo-Pacific and cooperate across industries, innovation, advanced technologies, and space. “Our shared vision unites our two countries for a more peaceful, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific region,” he said, adding that the partnership will “rise to the modern challenges of today and ensure a brighter future for both our countries.”

Modi Marks 79th Independence Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi began the day by paying floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat, before unfurling the national flag at the Red Fort and delivering his 12th consecutive address to the nation.

Calling Independence Day “a festival of hope and aspirations,” Modi reflected on the possibilities and challenges of 1947 and urged citizens to work “with greater determination” toward building a developed Bharat.

Continuing his tradition of vibrant headgear, Modi wore a saffron turban paired with a white kurta-churidar, saffron bandhgala jacket, and tricolour stole. His Independence Day turbans, often reflecting India’s cultural diversity, have included last year’s Rajasthani leheriya in orange, yellow, and green — a nod to heritage and national pride.
