US Renews Travel Warning for Afghanistan, Cites High Risk of Arbitrary Detention

The United States has once again urged its citizens to avoid travelling to Afghanistan, warning of serious security threats and the risk of arbitrary detention, Khaama Press reported.

In a fresh advisory on Tuesday, the US State Department cautioned Americans to “be aware of risks and make informed decisions” before considering travel. Afghanistan was placed at the top of Washington’s “D risk indicator” list—used to flag countries where US citizens face a heightened danger of wrongful detention.

Alongside Afghanistan, the department also highlighted Burma, Eritrea, Iran, Nicaragua, North Korea, Russia, and Venezuela as high-risk destinations. The warning follows incidents in which Taliban authorities detained American nationals who entered Afghanistan, intensifying Washington’s concerns.

The advisory stressed that terrorism, civil unrest, kidnappings, and the risk of wrongful detention remain severe threats, while the closure of the US Embassy in Kabul since 2021 leaves Washington unable to provide consular support. “Multiple terrorist groups are active in Afghanistan and US citizens are targets of kidnapping and hostage-taking,” the department said.

Separately, the State Department also cautioned US citizens in Kenya of possible terrorist attacks by al-Shabaab, noting that public spaces such as hotels, embassies, schools, markets, and places of worship remain prime targets.
