US Official Confirms Modi-Trump Meeting, Rules Out Mediation on Kashmir
The India-US relationship remains strong despite recent “turbulence,” a senior U.S. State Department official said, confirming that a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump will take place in due course. Talks are also ongoing to schedule the next Quad Leaders summit, either later this year or early next year.
The official emphasized the “very positive relationship” between Modi and Trump, noting ongoing planning for the Quad Summit and saying there is “continuous positive momentum” in bilateral ties. Earlier reports had suggested tensions might prevent a Trump visit to India, but officials said the relationship’s atmospherics have improved significantly.
On key issues, the official confirmed that India-US discussions on India’s Russian energy purchases are progressing positively, with a resolution expected in the coming weeks. The U.S. reiterated it does not intend to mediate the Kashmir dispute, maintaining it is a direct issue between India and Pakistan.
The official described ties with India as a “partnership of the future” and highlighted high-level engagement, including talks involving U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
