The conflict between the United States and Iran, which heightened tensions across the Middle East after joint US-Israel strikes on Iran last month, entered its ninth day on Sunday with no immediate signs of easing.

Fresh attacks were reported across the region, including in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain, while new mobile alerts in Dubai and Abu Dhabi warned residents of possible aerial attacks.

Key developments on Day 9

  • Explosions in Tel Aviv: At least 10 explosions were reported over Tel Aviv on Sunday as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps vowed to intensify attacks against Israel and US assets in the region.

  • Strikes in Lebanon and Iran: Israel struck southern Lebanon, including Beirut, and oil storage facilities in Tehran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the next phase of the conflict would bring “many surprises”.

  • Khamenei successor decision: Iran’s clerical body responsible for choosing a successor to slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has reportedly reached a decision, though the name has not been announced. Cleric Mohsen Heidari Alekasir hinted that even the “Great Satan” — referring to the US — had mentioned the individual’s name. Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader’s son, is widely seen as a possible successor.

Explosions were also heard in Iran’s Yazd Province on Sunday, according to state media cited by AFP. Israel struck an airport in Isfahan, destroying several F-14 fighter jets. Overnight, US and Israeli strikes also targeted five oil facilities in and around Tehran.

Ali Mohammad Naini, spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, warned that Iran was prepared for an “intense war” lasting up to six months.

As Tehran continued retaliatory strikes across the Gulf, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his earlier remarks apologising to neighbouring states had been “misinterpreted by the enemy seeking to sow division”.

“It has repeatedly been said we are brothers and must have good relations with neighbours. However, we are forced to retaliate to attacks but this does not mean we have a dispute with a neighbouring country or want to upset their people,” Pezeshkian said.

His comments followed a post by US President Donald Trump on Truth Social claiming Iran had “lost” and “surrendered to Middle East neighbours”.

Meanwhile, Kuwait said it intercepted three ballistic missiles, while Saudi Arabia downed three drones near Riyadh.

Tehran oil facility hit after Netanyahu warning

The US and Israel late Saturday targeted oil facilities in Iran for the first time since the conflict began. Flames were seen rising from a fuel storage facility in Tehran after Netanyahu warned of “many surprises” in the next phase of the war.

The Israeli military confirmed the strike, while footage accessed by the Associated Press showed the night sky glowing above the Iranian capital.

Israel says it targeted Iran-linked commanders in Lebanon

Israel continued strikes in Lebanon after the Iran-backed Hezbollah entered the conflict following the killing of Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes.

The Israeli military said it targeted commanders of the Lebanese branch of the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force operating in Beirut.

Iran targets US diplomatic sites in the Gulf

Iran has also targeted US diplomatic facilities across the Gulf. A drone strike targeted Riyadh Diplomatic Quarter, where the US Embassy and other foreign missions are located, according to the Saudi defence ministry.

In Baghdad, near the US Embassy compound, Katyusha rockets were fired, according to Reuters citing security sources.

‘We’re not looking to settle’: Trump

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said Washington was not seeking negotiations with the remaining Iranian leadership.

“We’re not looking to settle,” Trump said. “They’d like to settle. We’re not looking to settle.”

US special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff said Iran had been “not very amenable” in talks before the strikes began.

Other key developments

  • New Israeli airstrikes hit eastern and southwestern Tehran, with the military confirming a fresh wave of attacks across Iran.

  • Iran fired additional missiles toward Israel, prompting air raid sirens across the country including in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

  • Flights to Riyadh were diverted or turned back after Saudi Arabia reported responding to drone attacks, according to Flightradar24 data.

  • A drone strike hit Erbil International Airport in Erbil, killing a security guard and injuring another person.

  • Iran struck a facility near a seaport in Manama, Bahrain, injuring one person and damaging nearby shops.

  • Several sites in Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq were hit, killing one person.

  • Sirens sounded multiple times across the UAE, and shrapnel from intercepted projectiles caused minor damage to a building in Dubai Marina.

The death toll in Iran has climbed to about 1,300 since the conflict began, according to Al Jazeera. In Lebanon, Israeli strikes since Monday have killed at least 294 people and wounded more than 1,000, the Lebanese health ministry said.
