US Envoy Witkoff Heads to Moscow Amid Tensions Over Ukraine

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will travel to Moscow on Wednesday to meet with Russian officials, a source familiar with the plan confirmed on Tuesday. However, US authorities have remained tight-lipped about the details of his visit.

“The president has noted, of course, that Special Envoy Witkoff will be traveling to Russia this week, so we can confirm that from this podium,” State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce told reporters. “What that will entail, I have no details for you.”

Russian state-run news agency TASS, citing aviation sources, reported that a plane believed to be carrying Witkoff had already departed from the United States.

President Donald Trump has recently expressed growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has reportedly given Moscow a deadline—this Friday—to make concrete progress toward peace in Ukraine or face the prospect of stricter US sanctions.
