UP on High Alert Along Nepal Border as Violent Protests Escalate

Amid violent anti-government protests in Nepal, the Uttar Pradesh government has placed all seven districts along the Indo-Nepal border on high alert.

The move follows the resignation of Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli after days of unrest led by young demonstrators opposing corruption and a controversial social media ban.

DGP Rajiv Krishna has ordered intensified patrolling, round-the-clock surveillance, and additional police deployment in Shravasti, Balrampur, Bahraich, Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Siddharthnagar, and Maharajganj. A special control room in Lucknow has been set up to assist stranded Indians, with three 24×7 helplines, including WhatsApp: 0522-2390257, 0522-2724010, and 9454401674.

“The UP Police is fully committed to maintaining law and order and providing all possible assistance to Indian citizens stranded in Nepal,” ADG (Law & Order) Amitabh Yash said.

While the Indo-Nepal border remains open, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has tightened vigilance to prevent infiltration. District magistrates have been instructed to coordinate closely with police and border forces.

The alert comes as Nepal reels from violent clashes in Kathmandu and other cities. Protesters stormed and torched Parliament, the President’s office, and residences of senior leaders. Local reports say at least 19 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in police firing and clashes.

The unrest erupted after the government banned 26 major social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube. Although the ban was later revoked, public anger intensified, with demonstrators demanding an end to corruption and greater accountability.

Curfews have been imposed in several cities, and the Nepal Army has taken over security operations. Airlines including Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet have suspended flights to Kathmandu after protesters attempted to storm the international airport.
