UN Security Council to Meet on US Operation Against Venezuela’s Maduro
The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the US operation that led to the seizure of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in Caracas, the Somali presidency of the Council said on Saturday.
The closed-door meeting is scheduled for 10:00 am (1500 GMT), according to officials. It was requested by Venezuela and formally relayed to the Council by Colombia, diplomatic sources told AFP.
The request comes amid heightened international tensions following Washington’s operation in the Venezuelan capital, which has sparked sharp reactions from Caracas and its allies. Venezuela has described the action as a violation of its sovereignty and has sought urgent discussions at the UN’s highest security body.
Council members are expected to hear briefings on the circumstances surrounding the operation and its potential implications for regional stability and international law. It remains unclear whether the meeting will result in a formal statement or resolution, as divisions among permanent members are anticipated.
The Security Council presidency rotates monthly, with Somalia holding the post for the current month.
