UN Probes Disappearance of Syrian Man Deported by Austria
The UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances has opened an inquiry into the fate of a 32-year-old Syrian man deported by Austria in early July, who has since vanished without contact with his family or lawyers.
In an August 6 letter to Vienna, the UN urged Austria to press Syrian authorities to confirm whether the man is alive, disclose his location and detention conditions, and provide diplomatic assurances of his safety and humane treatment.
He was the first Syrian expelled from EU territory since the fall of President Bashar Assad. Millions fled Syria’s 2011–2024 civil war, but some EU states are now weighing repatriations despite ongoing violence in parts of the country.
Rights groups warned before his July 3 deportation that he could face mistreatment in Syria and that the case could set a dangerous precedent. His Austrian lawyer, Ruxandra Staicu, said the disappearance confirms those fears: “The situation in Syria is not secure, not stable; it is still changing.”
Austria’s foreign ministry confirmed receipt of the UN’s letter and said it is considering next steps with other relevant ministries.
The man, granted asylum in Austria in 2014, lost refugee status in 2019 after a criminal conviction. He was deported while awaiting a ruling on a fresh asylum application — a decision that remains pending.
