“UN Experts Warn Elderly British Couple May Die in Taliban Custody as Health Rapidly Deteriorates”

Two elderly British nationals, Peter Reynolds (80) and his wife Barbie Reynolds (76), are being held without charge by the Taliban in Afghanistan under dire conditions, according to UN human rights experts.

Arrested on February 1 in Bamian province, where they had lived since 2009, the couple has reportedly endured months in harsh detention, first in Pul-e-Charki prison and now in an underground intelligence facility cell.

UN Special Rapporteur Alice Edwards condemned their detention as inhumane, warning that both are in fragile health and could die without urgent medical attention. Peter, who had a stroke in 2023, may have suffered another while in custody, and Barbie is reportedly anemic with dizziness and numbness.

Peter described his ordeal as “the nearest thing to Hell”, saying he is shackled beside rapists and murderers. Their daughter, Sarah Entwistle, said the couple’s health is “a ticking time bomb” and implored for immediate action.

The Taliban have provided no formal explanation for the detention, though speculation includes suspicion over religious materials, Barbie’s teaching role, or potential diplomatic leverage. A CID report the couple was made to sign reportedly confirms no crime was found.

The UK has no diplomatic presence in Afghanistan, complicating efforts for their release. Qatar is said to be mediating behind the scenes. UN officials have called for an immediate review and emphasized that detaining the couple in such conditions violates international human rights standards.
