UK Joins US, Australia, Canada and India in Issuing Urgent Travel Warning for Iran Amid Rising Unrest

Several countries, including the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada and India, have issued urgent travel advisories urging their citizens to avoid all travel to Iran, citing escalating political unrest and security risks.

The warnings come as nationwide protests intensify across Iran, driven by anger over economic hardship, political corruption and alleged human rights abuses. Demonstrations have spread widely and led to clashes with security forces, prompting concerns for the safety of foreign nationals.

Why Countries Are Warning Against Travel

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) warned that British nationals — particularly dual UK-Iranian citizens — face a heightened risk of arrest, detention and interrogation. Similar alerts have been issued by other governments.

Rights groups say protests have been reported in dozens of cities, including Tehran, Isfahan and Shiraz, with thousands arrested and dozens killed since the unrest began. The death toll reportedly includes both protesters and security personnel.

Foreign governments have cautioned that the security situation can deteriorate rapidly, with little warning, making travel unpredictable and dangerous.

Risks for Tourists and Business Travelers

Authorities say that while some areas may appear calm, travelers risk being caught in violent demonstrations, facing arbitrary detention, or being subjected to questioning by Iranian authorities.

Tourists planning cultural or religious visits have been advised to postpone travel, while business travelers are being urged to reassess trips amid disruptions in commercial activity and transport in major cities.

For those already in Iran, governments have advised staying in secure accommodation, limiting movement, avoiding protest areas and maintaining contact with embassies, though consular assistance may be limited.

Safety Guidance for Those in Iran

Foreign offices have advised travelers to:

  • Closely monitor official travel advisories

  • Avoid protests, government buildings and large gatherings

  • Stay in touch with embassies and consular services

  • Plan for a possible emergency departure

  • Avoid political discussions or activity

Business travelers have been warned of additional risks, including delays, restricted movement and the potential confiscation of sensitive materials in the event of detention.

Alternative Travel Destinations

Travelers seeking safer alternatives in the region have been advised to consider destinations such as Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, which continue to welcome international visitors and remain largely unaffected by Iran’s internal unrest.

Governments said the advisories would remain under review as the situation in Iran continues to evolve.
