Trump to Meet Congressional Leaders Monday Ahead of Shutdown Deadline
President Donald Trump will meet the top four congressional leaders at the White House on Monday, just one day before the deadline to fund the federal government and avert a shutdown.
The meeting will bring together House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, according to a White House official and two others familiar with the planning.
“President Trump has once again agreed to a meeting in the Oval Office,” Schumer and Jeffries said in a joint statement Saturday night. “We are resolute in our determination to avoid a government shutdown and address the Republican health care crisis. Time is running out.”
Lawmakers remain at an impasse, with Democrats pressing for an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies and the reversal of Medicaid cuts included in the GOP’s earlier tax measure. Republicans have rejected those demands, calling for a “clean” seven-week funding extension.
If no deal is reached, a shutdown will begin at 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday.
The meeting comes after days of behind-the-scenes maneuvering. Democrats had previously secured a commitment from Trump before Republican leaders convinced him to cancel. Schumer privately lobbied Thune on Friday to reschedule the talks given the looming deadline.
Both parties are betting on who voters will blame if the government closes. Democrats insist Republicans will be held responsible, while GOP leaders accuse Democrats of holding federal funding hostage to force unrelated health care concessions.
