Trump Reverses Course, Vows More Weapons for Ukraine After Brief Halt in Aid
U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that Washington will send additional defensive weapons to Ukraine, just days after the White House paused some arms shipments to Kyiv.
“We’re going to have to send more weapons — defensive weapons primarily,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
“They’re getting hit very, very hard,” he added, referring to a surge in Russian attacks.
Trump, who has repeatedly voiced frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, said he was “not happy” with the Kremlin’s ongoing war, now in its third year.
The announcement comes amid some of the heaviest missile and drone assaults Ukraine has faced since the 2022 invasion, raising fears that the temporary pause in U.S. military support could severely weaken Ukraine’s defenses.
While former President Joe Biden authorized over $65 billion in military aid for Ukraine during his term, Trump had not approved any new assistance packages since taking office in January — until now.
The shift marks a potential recalibration of Trump’s stance on the war, after months of skepticism toward continued U.S. involvement.
