Trump Pulls US Out of Key Global Climate Bodies, Sparking Fresh Concerns Over Climate Action
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from several international organisations, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)—the 1992 treaty that underpins global climate cooperation—and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). President Trump claimed these bodies promote “radical climate policies” and systems of global governance that “no longer serve” US interests.
While President Trump has argued that American taxpayers have spent billions of dollars on international treaties and organisations, evidence shows that global climate cooperation has delivered measurable benefits. The UNFCCC’s Paris Agreement alone has helped reduce projected global warming by 2100 from 3.6°C to 2.7°C through coordinated international action.
Recent climate-fuelled wildfires in Los Angeles, which displaced nearly 100,000 Americans from their homes, stand as a stark reminder of what climate chaos means—not just for the world, but for the United States itself.
