Trump Announces US-China Trade Deal, Hints at ‘Very Big’ Agreement with India

US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced the signing of a trade deal with China and suggested that a major agreement with India could be on the horizon.

“We just signed [a trade deal] with China. We’re not going to make deals with everybody… but we’re having some great deals. We have one coming up, maybe with India — a very big one,” Trump said at a White House event focused on promoting a new government spending bill.

Trump hinted at significant market openings in both China and India. “We’re going to open up India. In the China deal, we’re starting to open up China — things that never really could have happened,” he added, while noting that the US is enjoying positive relations with many countries.

However, the president offered no specific details on the deal reached with China and remained vague on what the potential India agreement might include.

“Not Making Deals with Everyone”

Trump also emphasized that the administration isn’t aiming to strike trade agreements across the board. “Some we are just going to send them a letter, say thank you very much. You are to pay 25, 35, 45 percent. That’s the easy way to do it,” he said, referring to tariff impositions. “My people don’t want to do it that way. They want to make more deals than I would do.”

Trade Talks with India Gaining Momentum

The comments come amid growing optimism about a US-India trade pact. Earlier this month, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick told the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum that both sides were close to finalizing a deal. “You should expect a deal between the United States and India in the not-too-distant future,” he said, expressing strong optimism about the outcome.

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also confirmed ongoing negotiations, stating on June 10 that both countries were working toward a “fair and equitable” agreement that would benefit both economies.

As the US gears up for elections and looks to solidify key trade relationships, all eyes are now on Washington and New Delhi to see if Trump’s “very big” deal with India materializes in the coming weeks.
