A post-graduate student from Tripura died of stab injuries on Friday, more than two weeks after he was allegedly attacked by a group of people in the Selaqui area of Dehradun, police said.

The victim, identified as 24-year-old Angel Chakma, was a student at a private university in Dehradun. He had been admitted to hospital with serious stab wounds following an altercation on December 9 and succumbed to his injuries during treatment on Friday.

Senior sub-inspector Jitendra Kumar of Selaqui police station said the incident occurred near a liquor outlet after an argument broke out.

“According to a complaint filed by the victim’s brother, Michael Chakma, who was also injured in the incident, the attackers were allegedly intoxicated and used racial slurs,” Kumar said. He added that both brothers had consumed alcohol at the time of the incident.

Police said a case had already been registered and a special team has been formed to arrest the prime suspect, a Nepalese national residing in Haridwar.

“Five accused — Avinash Negi, Shaurya Rajput, Suraj Khwas, Ayush Badoni and Sumit — were arrested on December 14,” Kumar said.
