Travel is no longer just about escaping routine; for modern Indian travellers, it’s about seeking self-discovery, expression, and memorable stories. A new Skyscanner report highlights how 2026 will see travel becoming increasingly personal, purposeful, and curated around individual preferences.

1. Book-inspired journeys
Literature continues to fuel wanderlust. The survey reveals that 84% of travellers have booked—or would consider—a trip inspired by a book. Reading remains a travel ritual for 8 in 10 respondents, whether it’s a paperback on the beach, an audiobook on the train, or something motivational by the pool. Social media has amplified this trend, with 43% wanting to visit book-related locations discovered online.

2. The hotel as the destination
For many, the stay itself is now the main attraction. From boutique lobbies with art installations to beachfront villas and panoramic penthouses, 82% of Indian travellers choose destinations based on the experience their accommodation offers. Cricketer Suryakumar Yadav sums it up: “Some accommodations aren’t just where you stay; they’re why you travel in the first place.”

3. Culinary adventures beyond restaurants
Food remains central to travel, but the focus is shifting to local grocery stores and markets. Nearly 80% of Indian travellers explore supermarkets abroad, while 73% visit convenience stores to discover local bites. For 60%, these trips offer cultural immersion, with snacks, drinks, and sauces providing a lasting sense of place.

4. Travel as a beauty ritual
Trips are increasingly a way to indulge in self-care. Over half (53%) shop duty-free for makeup and skincare, 48% visit local beauty stores, and 45% undergo treatments abroad. Beauty has become a key motivation, reflecting travellers’ desire for personal expression and unique experiences.

5. AI as the new travel planner
Artificial intelligence is emerging as a trusted travel companion. The report finds that 86% of Indian travellers use AI tools for planning, booking, cost comparison, and exploring options. While early-stage, AI is set to transform travel planning and decision-making in 2026.

6. Purpose-driven travel
With rising costs of living, trips are increasingly shaped by passions, priorities, and the quest for experiences that feel “worth it.” Millennials and Gen Z are leading the charge, treating travel budgets as a form of self-investment and making intentional choices that deliver deeper satisfaction.

In short, 2026 promises travel that is immersive, meaningful, and highly personalized. For Indian travellers, it’s not just about distance—it’s about how profoundly a journey resonates.
